Joi is a native Floridian who grew up in the City of Gretna, Florida, a small town 27 miles west of the capital city of Tallahassee. Having grown up with parents who were both public servants and civil rights activist, Joi has actively served those in need since her youth. She was a dual enrollment student in high school, allowing her to complete an Associate Degree from Tallahassee Community College simultaneously with her high School diploma. She then attended Florida A&M University on a Bright Futures Scholarship, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Public Administration. She also earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Florida State University, where she wrote her Master's thesis on economic solutions to the water utility crisis in her hometown. Upon graduation, Joi moved to Jacksonville to earn her Juris Doctor degree from Florida Coastal School of Law. While at Florida Coastal, Joi litigated on behalf of underprivileged youth as a Certified Legal Intern and was a member of the Black Law School Association's Mock Trial Team.
After Florida Coastal, Joi began her legal career with Parks and Crump, LLC in Tallahassee, a firm most notably known for their social justice work. She then went on to contract with the Florida Department of Revenue in Crestview, Florida to establish and prosecute child support cases. Joi simultaneously maintained a small private practice where she represented clients for over 5 years in domestic relations cases, personal injury and negotiated countless settlements on behalf of Panhandle residents in the wake of the 2010 BP Oil Spill Crisis. Joi then moved to Winter Park Florida where she practiced high in domestic relations and personal injury work in a elite boutique firm, Mark Lang and Associates. While there she honed her trial practice skills and authored and argued numerous appeals before the 5th DCA.
Joi is a member of the Florida Bar (Admitted 9/2006); Georgia Bar; American Association for Justice; American Bar Association; National Bar Association; Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys; National Notary Association, and also barred in the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida and the Northern District of Georgia.
In the spring of 2014, Joi moved to the Greater Atlanta Area, with her Veteran husband, Terruss Reed. She was admitted to practice in the State of Georgia in December of 2014. Simultaneously she joined a large PI firm where she worked diligently for almost 5 years grossing the firm roughly 4 million dollars in attorney’s fees singularly. Longing to return to her more boutiques practice roots where her clients could receive a more personalized hands on experience. In October 2019, she joined with her law school classmate, Laurie M. Thomas to form Reed Thomas Law Group. The Reed Thomas Law Group provide services to their clients in personal injury, estate planning, family law, civil litigation, appeals, mediation (civil and domestic) and arbitration.
In her spare time, Joi loves spending time with her Husband, family and friends, reading novels, traveling, actively worshiping with her church family (Fairfield Baptist, Lithonia GA and Beulah Hill Baptist, Gretna FL) and serving her community through her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, Inc.
